Story of A Good Listener

I see you sitting quietly facing a bunch of people

Their laughter echoing in the empty spaces of your mind

Words pouring out of their mouths like eager waves of a sea

Words almost making sense, trying so hard to make you believe

That it means something, that they are real stories

But every time, failing at it even before thier waves reach your shore

Nontheless, you land an ear for those willing words to dump on your ground

You have done this too many times to keep a count

Greedy eyes staring back at your soulless pits hoping for a response

And all you do is smile or nod, cz you are supposed to be kind

Even though there’s a hurricane going on inside your mind

With all your demons mercilessly dancing with those unending thoughts

Your head pounding and heart aching but all you do is smile

Shutting down the voices inside your mind

Making them drown in the dark sea of your heart

Cz how can you allow them to lash out and drench those around?

Who are caged by miseries of their own- a bad day or maybe a cold

You don’t know which one is whose worry anymore

Cz they are too many, and you too are surrounded by your own

But you let their words torture your obedient ear

Cz all your life you’ve been doing this, you are after all a good listener

Their words always find a way to get to you- words of joy and anger and pain

And the owners of those mouths have the audacity

To never take a moment and ask you how was your day

So you smile or maybe nod balancing both worlds

Listening to their woes while battling with your own

And I know being alone in an empty room may suck

But isn’t it worse when your screams go unheard by the people you love?

When you feel responsible to always be there

To praise or give an advise or simply nod and agree

Just because they’ve found a good listener in you

But you clearly haven’t found yours yet and I fear you might never

As you have now become a master in shutting your voices down

The words that try to escape your mouth are swallowed smoothly

Probably with a glass of wine or a convincing smile

On a Saturday night when you sit quietly at a corner facing a bunch of people

When their laughter echoes in the empty spaces of your mind

And all you can do is nod and give your best smile
